On a warm September day 20 Wildlife Explorers, leaders and parents visited RSPB Dungeness in Kent.

Dungeness is situated in a unique habitat of shingle and vegetation extending into the English Channel.

The RSPB reserve is well structured with many hides from which to view birds. The outstanding hide is “Denge Marsh”. The explorers were able to see large flocks of Starling and Lapwing from here. The flocks of bird were regularly disturbed by hunting Sparrowhawk and Peregrine. The explorers were able to see how species like Starling keep in tight flocks to avoid predation. A Curlew sandpiper was compared to the Dunlin, the longer curved bill was very evident! White ruffs were very visible, while diving duck such as Pochard were seen well.

However, the highlight was close views of Yellow Wagtails. The explorers were  able to see Pied and Yellow Wagtail along side each other.

On the ARC pit hide over 30 Ruddy Duck were seen.

Clouded Yellow Butterfly was also observed. 52 species of bird were seen on the visit.
