A turnout of 9 Wildlife Explorers plus guests. The evening was warm and the air still. The insects were on the wing. Ideal conditions for Nightjar spotting.

James was in his element chasing bugs with Simon doing duty identifying those that came within sight.

The bird list was not huge, but we were lucky with our target bird. Not only that but Simon saw a woodcock above the trees to the north.

As the sun went down, and we all spent time slapping away midges, we heard that distinctive churring sound. Not long after that the nightjars began to perform. Defying gravity, they looked like butterflies as they floated in their hawking flight after moths and other flying insects.

The nightjar performance in the twilight was fantastic.
