REPORT BY JAMES BAILEY (Wildlife Explorer member)

On Sunday, 15 May 2005, we went by minibus to Arne, a reserve in Dorset.   On the way I saw my favourite tree – a red horse chestnut tree.

When we got there, we walked into a meadow and we had a talk about the wildlife we might see.   The Reserve warden talked about butterflies and as he talked a wall butterfly flew through our group.

Amongst some trees at the end of the meadow we heard a goldcrest and a chaffinch.

We walked through the heathland and on our way to the hide some of the group saw a common lizard and a beetle, which looked like a dor beetle.   I also saw a green tiger beetle. In the hide Derek saw a hobby over the heathland far away and a teal on the water.  On the heath we saw lots of wood ants and in the forest a huge wood ants nest.

After lunch we went into the woods and saw a nuthatch disappearing in a hole in a tree and I took a photo of it.   In the woods we saw a great spotted woodpecker darting from tree to tree, and also saw a sika deer.   Walking on, we saw a cuckoo and had a good sight of it and heard its call.   The cuckoo flew across the heath.

I saw a tree that looked like a boar’s face, and a bug on the tree that looked like a cicada.   We saw a seven-spotted ladybird.

We walked along the coastline and I found some lovely shells.

Then it was time to go home after a good day.
