Meeting on the sea front at Titchfield is a good place to start a bird watching session. We often get some of the best spots from here—this week a large flotilla of Eider which floated slowly past our viewpoint. En route to the entrance the sharper eyed amongst us spotted the whistling duck which was being fed with the mallard ducks in the harbour.

At the entrance we split into two groups going in opposite directions around the reserve. The scrapes were fairly quiet with the usual mix of lapwing, ducks and gulls. Once we got our eye in we picked out the snipe and gadwall and the one redshank wading around.

We ate lunch in one of the hides scanning the skies for raptors eventually spotting a kestrel and sparrowhawk. Not much else materialised until our patient waiting was rewarded with the darting flight of a kingfisher.
