We got off to a prompt start. The day began well and the whole weekend proved to be warm with gentle breezes. We could have been in the south of France!!
It was a busy schedule that only left a little free time. Birds were everywhere. Surprisingly, though, we saw less birds this time than on any of our previous visits to the area. Having said that a list of 115 species was pretty special!!
There were so many highlights to the weekend:
F The Dotterel was very, very special, F and the Montague’s Harrier soaring low over the fields just took our breath away, F Pink footed geese (spotted by Tom) were superb, F The nightingale song was fabulous F The spotted redshank in full summer plumage, F And the Common Gull hiding away with all the other gulls, (well spotted Barbara), F The warblers gave us a run for our money trying to identify them all F …. And there was so much more
Our youngsters also had time to play some table tennis in the study centre and we have some excellent Halma players developing.
We all had a great time—although I think we did need the Bank holiday Monday, following the trip, to recover; we all looked pretty tired at the end.
We would like to acknowledge the financial support that the Winchester Group of the RSPB provided. Without their help we would not have been able to put on the trip.
Joc’ and Amy with the help of Mark and others performed miracles in the kitchen.
Finally the group leaders made this all possible: thanks to Alex, Barbara, Lynne and Derek. Thanks for all your efforts. It was definitely worth it.
