Birdtrail 2008

The RSPB in association with Hampshire Ornithological Society (HOS) and Hampshire Wildlife Trust have just held their first “Bird trail” event at Bolderwood in the New Forest on Sunday 8th June. The event took the form of a three mile Bird trail with three activity bases through woodland. Each member of the participating groups were asked to bring a  guest. One hundred and forty-two RSPB Wildlife Explorers, HWT watch members and  a HOS group , took  part in the event which was hosted by TV Presenter Chris Packham.

The groups were split into teams with bird names like Redstart and Siskin. Each group had a pictorial checklist of birds they were likely to see on the trail, points were awarded accordingly for each species seen.

On a Hot June day 51 species of Birds were seen , including some interesting species like Firecrest, Crossbill, Wood Warbler, possible Goshawk and Herring Gull. Every entrant to the event received a certificate autographed by Chris Packham. The winning team (called Blackcaps) from Chandlers Ford RSPB Wildlife Explorers  were presented with individual prizes by Chris Packham. Chris and RSPB birdtrail organiser Derek Lister were also presented by Hampshire Ornithological Society  chairman John Eyres with framed Bird trail Caricatures at the end of a highly successful event.
