We had a good turnout for this fieldtrip. A good clear, warm day with a gentle onshore wind.

It was a relatively slow start. In fact the huge spiders web we saw looked like it was going to be the highlight of the whole fieldtrip. We had also missed the osprey that had been reported in the area. But then suddenly everything began to show.

There seemed to be loads of passage greenshanks. Then loads of Black tailed Godwits on the mudflats. Little egrets floating in and a then three darting kingfishers making bright metallic streaks low across the pans.

Things were looking up… then the highlight of day—two hobbies feeding over the reeds. We all watched their agility with awe; we saw how they pounced on dragonflies, ate them in flight and prepared for another pass-through the feeding area. Absolutely fantastic.

Then we had the same argument we had last year in the same location—was it a whimbrel or was it a curlew? Then a peregrine on a post out on the mudflats followed by Eider duck floating out on the Solent.

Overall a great day, all with good company. What more could you ask for?
